Thank you for this post. It is indeed shocking that these things persist in Britain.

The published figures are always disturbing, showing that this practice remains prevalent in Hindu, Muslim and Sikh communities nationwide.

I think there are some positive steps being taken within the Muslim community to address the issue, but it will take time as attitudes are well embedded in culture.

The caption on the picture reads ”Islam vs Women”, but of course Islam prohibits forced marriage.

”O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should you treat them with harshness, nor take away part of the dower you have given them, except where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ou take a dislike to them it may be that you dislike a thing, and God brings about through it a great deal of good.”(Quran 4:19)

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: ”A virgin came to the Prophet and mentioned that her father had married her against her will, so the Prophet allowed her to exercise her choice. (Hadith Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Number 2091)

Asalaamu Alykum wa rahmatullah,

It is not Islam that teaches such brutality and unfairness, but the cultures in this world that abuse their daughters and wives in the false name of religion. Astafurghallah, it is sad to see how distant people are becoming from Islam and the purity of its teachings.

I dont think it is all about religion. Yes, islam is the ”ruling religion” in the areas, but should we mix the two? It happens in other religions too. Forced marriages happen in hindu families and sikh families as well. They are not always in the name of religion, they are to safegaurd a tradition. Most parents will say it is for the good of the child. But, blinded by the society they live in, they fail to look inside the hearts of their own child.
